The high-leverage insight for predicting on'yomi during article reading: which kanji share a sound component, and what reading does that component carry?

Lesson highlight: This chapter clusters around temporal measurement (季節 "season," ~歳 "years old," 歴史 "history") and institutional organization (委員会 "committee," 中央 "center," 企業 "enterprise"). Many compounds pair lesson kanji: 季節 (season), 歴史 (history). 日本には春はる、夏なつ、秋あき、冬ふゆの四季があります。季節が変かわると、温度おんどや湿度しつどを調節する必要ひつようがあります。特とくに梅雨つゆの季節には、部屋へやの湿度しつど調節が重要じゅうようです。

日本人は季節をとても大切にします。正月しょうがつにはお節料理を食べ、歳末大売出しで買かい物ものをします。お歳暮という年末の贈おくり物ものの習慣しゅうかんもあります。

私は今年で二十歳になります。「あなたは何歳ですか」と聞きかれたら、「二十歳です」と答こたえます。日本では、二十歳は大人おとなになる大切たいせつな年としです。

学校では、日本史や世界史を勉強べんきょうします。歴史を学ぶことは、過去かこの出来事できごとを知るだけでなく、今の世界を理解りかいするために役立やくだちます。文学史を学べば、作家さっかたちが生いきた時代がよく分かります。

就職しゅうしょくする時には、履歴書りれきしょを書きます。履歴書には学歴と職歴を書きます。学歴は、どの学校を卒業そつぎょうしたかということです。職歴は、これまでどんな仕事をしてきたかということです。

前歴がある人は、新あたらしい会社でもその経験けいけんを生いかすことができます。面接めんせつでは、自分の経歴について詳くわしく説明せつめいします。

D. 📌 Lesson-Specific: The ⽌ Radical Cluster (歳, 歯, 歴)

Three kanji in this lesson share the ⽌ radical (とめる "to stop"), but their meanings diverge completely. This is a structural coincidence, not a semantic cluster:

• 歳 (year-end, age) — ⽌ + 戉 (ancient axe component). The "stop" meaning doesn't apply; the character originally depicted a harvest tool marking the year's end.
• 歯 (tooth) — ⽌ + 米 + 凵. The ⽌ here is a structural element, not a meaning component. Think "tooth" as a standalone meaning.
• 歴 (curriculum, continuation) — ⽌ + 林 + 厂. The component 林 (forest) suggests "passing through" multiple points, yielding the "passage of time" meaning.

Takeaway: Don't assume shared radicals mean shared meanings. In KANJIDIC2, these three are filed under ⽌ for dictionary organization, but when learning compounds, treat each kanji's meaning independently.

E. ⚠️ Watch Out!

企てる vs 企画

• 企てる (くわだてる) — kun reading, "scheme/attempt" (can have a negative connotation, like plotting)
• 企画 (きかく) — on reading, "plan" (neutral/positive, used in business contexts)
  Context matters: 悪だくみを企てる (plot evil) vs 新製品を企画する (plan a new product).

二十歳 (はたち)

• Special reading, not にじゅうさい. This is the only common age with a unique kun reading.
• Other ages: 三十歳 (さんじゅっさい), 四十歳 (よんじゅっさい) — regular サイ pattern.

節約 (せつやく) vs 調節 (ちょうせつ)

• 節約 — economize, save resources (electricity, water, money)
• 調節 — adjust, regulate (temperature, humidity, volume)
  Both use 節 but with different verbs. 調節 is about fine-tuning; 節約 is about restraint.

お節料理 (おせちりょうり)

• Unique reading: せち (not せつ) due to sound shift in this set phrase.
• Refers specifically to New Year's food. Don't use 節料理* alone.

歯車 (はぐるま) — "gear"

• Kun reading は + くるま (wheel). Means both mechanical gear and metaphorically "a cog in the machine."
• On'yomi compound 歯科 (しか, dentistry) uses シ reading instead.

即 compounds with gemination

• 即興 (そっきょう) — note the ッ.
• 即座に (そくざに), 即時に (そくじに) — no gemination.
  The ッ in 即興 is because キョウ starts with a k-sound, triggering the geminate. ザ and ジ don't, so no ッ.
