Phonetic Series Summary

💡 Lesson highlight: This chapter has three clean phonetic pairs in eleven kanji — exceptional density. 期 & 基 both share 其【キ】, 紹 & 招 both share 召【ショウ】, and 製 is literally 制 with 衣 (clothing) underneath, sharing both glyph and reading セイ. Recognising these on sight saves you from memorising six readings as six independent facts.

Each topic has two versions: 🟢 N3/N2 Level — simpler structures, です/ます register, core compounds. 🔴 Advanced Level — natural Japanese, dense nominal phrases, formal/literary register. Tip — 製 vs 制: 製 = manufacture (with 衣 = clothing underneath, the historical meaning was "making clothes"); 制 = system/control alone. 製品 (manufactured products) vs 制度 (system). Memorize visually: 製 has the clothes, 制 doesn't.

Tip — 期 vs 基: Both share 其【キ】as their sound component, hence the identical reading. 期 has 月 (moon → time); 基 has 土 (earth → foundation). Right-side identical, bottom decides the meaning.

Tip — 紹 vs 招: Both share 召【ショウ】. 紹 has 糸 (thread → connecting / linking) → introduce. 招 has 扌 (hand → beckoning) → invite. Hand for invite, thread for introduce.

Reading shift on 期: Almost always キ. The exception is 最期 (さいご) — "the last moment of one's life", uses ゴ. Don't read it as さいき.

延 has the most kun'yomi readings in this lesson, with three closely related verbs and several compound forms. Drill them as a family:

Mix-up alert: 延べる (のべる) and 述べる (のべる) are different verbs with different kanji. 延べる = lay out / spread / sum up totals. 述べる = state, mention. The reading is identical; context disambiguates.
