Lesson 46 is the institutions lesson. The 言 (speech / formal utterance) cluster — 証 許 認 課 — is the core: each is a formal speech act. The 禾 (grain / measure) cluster — 税 程 — is about quantification.

Functional Component Breakdown

663 — 句

• Components: 勹 (wrap) + 口 (mouth)
• Function: 会意. "Sounds wrapped together" → "phrase, clause". The 勹 supplies the bounding/grouping sense; 口 supplies the speech sense.
• Note: Rare classification — neither pure 形声 nor pure 象形.

664 — 旬

• Components: 勹 (wrap) + 日 (sun, day)
• Function: 会意. "Days wrapped together" — historically a 10-day cycle (the Chinese 旬 unit). The reading ジュン is associated with the 旬 period; シュン means "in season".
• Pair with 句: same 勹 wrapper, different content — 口 (sound) for 句, 日 (day) for 旬. Memorize as a structural pair.

665 — 保

• Components: 亻 (person) + 呆 (foolish; original picture of a baby in a wrap)
• Function: 会意. The 呆 part is etymologically a wrapped infant — "a person protecting a baby" → "preserve, maintain". The "foolish" sense of 呆 is a much later semantic drift; do not let modern 呆【ボウ】"foolish" mislead you about 保's meaning.
• Note: The reading ホ is conventional — there's no clean 形声 alignment.

666 — 証

• Components: 言 (speech) + 正 (correct, upright)
• Function: 形声. 正【セイ・ショウ】supplies the sound (証 reads ショウ). "Speech that is correct / upright" → "evidence, testimony, proof".

667 — 許

• Components: 言 (speech) + 午 (noon — but originally 杵 "pestle")
• Function: 形声 historically; now disputed. 午【ゴ】and 許【キョ】don't align in modern Mandarin or modern Japanese, so the phonetic series is broken in current use. Treat the reading キョ as conventional / fixed.

668 — 認

• Components: 言 (speech) + 刃 (blade) + 心 (heart)
• Function: 形声 / 会意 hybrid. 刃【ジン】is a candidate phonetic for 認【ニン】(palatalisation in the ジ→ニ direction). The 心 reinforces the meaning ("recognize from the heart, after speech and contemplation").

669 — 課

• Components: 言 (speech) + 果 (fruit, result)
• Function: 形声. 果【カ】supplies the sound — exact match. "Speech that produces a result" → "duty, task, assignment". The "section / department" sense (課長, 経理課) generalizes from "the unit assigned a duty".

670 — 税

• Components: 禾 (grain) + 兌 (exchange — historical)
• Function: 形声. 兌【エツ・ダ】shifts to ゼイ in 税 — a known phonetic-series irregularity. Same 兌 series gives 説【セツ】(theory), 脱【ダツ】(escape) — the readings span ゼイ/セツ/ダツ.
• Note: Historically taxes were paid in grain (禾), hence the radical.

671 — 程

• Components: 禾 (grain) + 呈 (present, show)
• Function: 形声. 呈【テイ】supplies the sound — exact match. The grain radical is older — measuring grain → measuring extent / degree.

672 — 実

• Components: 宀 (roof) + a simplified form of 貫 (or in older glyph 毋+貝)
• Function: Modern 実 is a simplified form. Historical 實 = 宀 + 毋 + 貝 ("treasure / fruit gathered under a roof"). Sound ジツ is conventional in modern reading; do not rely on a phonetic component for prediction.

673 — 美

• Components: 羊 (sheep, on top) + 大 (big, on bottom)
• Function: 会意. "Big sheep" — historically a fat sheep was a beautiful / valuable sacrifice. The reading ビ is conventional.
• Radical = top half ✓ — 羊 supplies the meaning (a beautiful animal); 大 supplies emphasis.

Lesson highlight: The 言-cluster (証 許 認 課) shares structure but not sound — these are formal speech-act kanji where 言 is purely a meaning radical. They make a coherent semantic group: testify (証), permit (許), recognize (認), assign-and-report-on (課).

Lesson highlight #2: 句 + 旬 share the 勹 (wrapper) structural element. They look very similar — only the inside differs (口 vs 日). Memorize as a pair: "wrapper of words" vs "wrapper of days".

Tip — 保証 vs 保障 (both ほしょう): 保証 = commercial guarantee (warranty, money-back, character reference). 保障 = formal/abstract security (人権保障 human-rights security, 社会保障 social security). The right kanji shifts the register dramatically. Tip — 課程 vs 過程 (both かてい): 課程 (this lesson) = a course / curriculum (教育課程). 過程 = a process / sequence (発達過程). Different first kanji, identical reading. Context disambiguates. Tip — Reading shifts on 旬: ジュン in 上旬 / 中旬 / 下旬 (10-day periods). シュン only in the standalone "in season" sense (旬の食材 = seasonal ingredients).

D. Homophone Deep Dive — 保証 / 保障 / 補償

This lesson's heaviest pedagogical lift is the three-way ほしょう distinction. All three are common in formal writing; mixing them is a common native-Japanese error too.

Lesson-specific tips:

• The 言-cluster (証 許 認 課) is four of eleven — formal speech-act kanji. Treat them as a semantic family even though the readings differ.
• The 保証/保障/補償 (all ほしょう) trio is the highest-frequency homophone confusion in the whole textbook so far. Memorize the three-way distinction (Section 4D) — it pays back over and over.
• 課程 (this lesson) and 過程 (uses 過) are both かてい. Always disambiguate by context.
• 実 has 16 vocabulary entries — the densest kanji in this lesson. Budget extra time. The kun reading 実る (bear fruit) is high-frequency in figurative use ("efforts bore fruit").

💭 Raw file issues (corrected silently in this workbook):

• 実 [みのる] /bear fruit/ → headword should be 実る (with okurigana る). The bare-kanji form 実 only takes the noun reading み. Listed as 実る [みのる] above (line 67 of kanji_in_context_046.txt).
• 実際に [じっさいに] /as a mater of fact, actually/ → "mater" should be matter (line 60, English typo).

Cross-lesson connections:

• Forward: 商 (Lesson 47) shares the reading ショウ with 証 from this lesson (商人 vs 証人) — the homophone is flagged in Lesson 47's Watch Out section.
• The 保 in 保証 is a building block for many institutional words (保険, 保健, 保障, 保育園) — make sure you're firm on it before Lesson 47.
