あらすじ

山に囲かこまれた田舎いなか町・糸守いともりに住む女子高校生の宮水三葉は、ある朝、東京の男子高校生になった夢ゆめを見る。一方、東京の高校生・立花瀧も、行ったことのない山の町で女子高校生になっている夢を見る。やがて二人は、眠ねむっている間に本当に体が入れ替わっていることに気づく。会ったことのない二人は、スマートフォンにメモを残し合いながら、たがいの生活を送り始める。同じ年に公開された自分のアニメーション映画を、新海誠しんかいまこと監督かんとく自身が小説にした作品（2016年）。瀧の「俺おれ」と三葉の「私」、二つの一人称いちにんしょうで物語が進む。

A Tokyo boy and a girl from a mountain shrine town who have never met find themselves swapping bodies in their sleep, and start running each other's lives through notes left on their phones — told in alternating first person, 俺おれ and 私.

1. 第一章　夢

朝、目が覚めるとなぜか泣いている。見ていたはずの夢は、いつも思い出せない。東京で暮くらす「私」と「俺」、二人の語りが一行ごとに入れ替わりながら、同じ朝を描えがく短い章。二人はスーツを着て電車に乗り、街をながめながら、だれかひとりだけを探さがしている。

A short prologue: two narrators, 私 and 俺, both adults in Tokyo, wake in tears from a dream they cannot recall, and each rides the commuter train searching for one particular someone.

2. 第二章　端緒

瀧が目を覚ますと、知らない部屋で、女の子の体になっていた。次の日、糸守町の高校生・三葉は、家族や友だちから「昨日はおかしかった」と言われるが、何も覚えていない。ノートには知らない字で「お前は　誰だ？」と書いてある。父は町長で選挙せんきょの最中、祖母そぼは神社を守っている。その夜、三葉は妹の四葉と祭りで舞い、人々の前で米をかんで「口嚙くちかみ酒」を作る。それを同級生に見られた三葉は、「来世は東京のイケメン男子にしてくださーい！」と夜の山に叫さけぶ。

Taki wakes in a girl's body; the next day Mitsuha, back as herself, hears she acted strangely and finds "Who are you?" in her notebook. Stifled by small-town Itomori — mayor father, shrine duties, the kuchikami-zake ritual performed in front of classmates — she shouts that she wants to be a Tokyo boy in her next life.

3. 第三章　日々

今度は三葉が、東京の瀧の体で目を覚ます。学校へ行く道に迷まよい、カフェに感動し、アルバイト先のレストランでは失敗ばかりだが、奥寺先輩せんぱいの切られたスカートを縫ぬってあげて仲良なかよくなる。やがて二人は、週に二、三度、眠ると入れ替わっていることを理解し、スマフォの日記でやり取りをして、ルールを決める。ある日、三葉になった瀧は、祖母と四葉と山の上のご神体へ口嚙み酒を納おさめに行き、祖母から「ムスビ」の話を聞く。カタワレ時、彗星すいせいを見上げた瀧に、祖母が言う。「あんた今、夢を見とるな？」。東京で目を覚ました瀧は、三葉が約束した奥寺先輩とのデートに出かけるが、うまく話せない。先輩には「今は、他に好きな子がいるでしょう？」と言われる。三葉のメモには「空には彗星が見えるね」とあるのに、東京の空に彗星はない。そしてこの日から、入れ替わりは二度と起きなかった。

Mitsuha's first day as Taki in Tokyo; the two work out that they swap when they sleep and start leaving each other diary notes and rules. As Mitsuha, Taki carries the kuchikami-zake up to the shrine's sacred tree and hears the grandmother's "musubi"; back in Tokyo he fumbles the date Mitsuha set up with Okudera — and after that day the swapping stops.

4. 第四章　探訪

入れ替わりが止まって数週間。瀧は記憶をたよりに湖の町の絵を何枚まいも描き、三葉に会うために飛驒ひだへ向かう。司と奥寺先輩もついてくる。町の名前も分からないまま聞いて回り、あきらめかけたラーメン屋で、絵を見た店の人が言う。「それ、昔のイトモリやろ？」。糸守町は三年前、ティアマト彗星のかけらが落ちて、五百人以上が亡くなった町だった。図書館で見た名簿めいぼには、テシガワラ、サヤちん、そして三葉と四葉と祖母の名前がある。スマフォに残っていた三葉の日記は目の前で消えていき、瀧は名前さえ思い出せなくなる。それでも手首の組紐と「ムスビ」の言葉を思い出した瀧は、次の朝ひとりで山の上のご神体へ登り、三年前に納めた三葉の口嚙み酒を飲む。

With the swaps over, Taki sketches the lake town from memory and goes to Hida to find Mitsuha, only to learn Itomori was destroyed three years ago by a fragment of the comet, and that she is on the list of the dead. Clinging to the braided cord on his wrist and the word "musubi", he climbs alone to the sacred tree and drinks her kuchikami-zake.

二つの一人称

The narration alternates between Taki (俺おれ) and Mitsuha (私), sometimes switching within a chapter with no heading. The pronoun is the cue — 俺 alone accounts for ×654 kanji tokens, the single biggest "unknown kanji" on the readability panel, so learning it first buys the most coverage. When the two are swapped, the narrator is still the person inside: 俺-narration describing a girl's morning is Taki in Mitsuha's body.

入れ替わり中の話し方

When the two are swapped, each keeps their own way of speaking inside the other's body — which is how friends notice. In 第三章 Mitsuha, as Taki, has to hunt for the right pronoun in front of his friends, and her dialect leaks:

糸守の方言

Itomori is fictional, set in the Hida region of Gifu, and its residents speak a Hida-flavoured dialect. Tokyo scenes are in standard Japanese, so dialect is also a quick signal of where a scene is. The grandmother's speech is the heaviest.
